What's Up Lately at ACM India – New Year Edition

Hello all ACM India Members:

At the outset, I wish you and your dear ones a very happy 2024! Hope you had a wonderful 2023, and here is looking forward to another year full of joy, prosperity, and satisfaction.

I have missed a couple of editions of “What’s up Lately” newsletter, but this is a great occasion to revive the practice and bring you up to date on some recent and imminent developments worth celebrating.

Let me start by mentioning the recent recognition of contributions from India at ACM global level:

  • Congratulations to Gourab Panigrahi and Phani Motamarri from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, who were named among the recipients of the prestigious ACM Gordon Bell Prize for 2023.
  • Partha Pratim Talukdar (our ACM India 2022 Early Career Researcher Award recipient) was a featured member in the People of ACM series recently.

On the India Awards front, the 2023 recipient of Outstanding Contribution to Computing Education (OCCE) Award is Sudip Misra of IIT Kharagpur. Nutan Limaye (on leave) from IIT Bombay, and currently at IT University of Copenhagen Denmark, was selected as the recipient of the Outstanding Contributions in Computing by a Woman (OCCW) Award for 2023. Pranjal Dutta the recipient of ACM India Doctoral Dissertation Award (DDA), while Honorable Mention goes to Jogendra Nath Kundu.

Congratulations to all of them! The Early Career Researcher (ECR) Award and Student Chapter Awards will be announced soon. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our award sponsors: Google Research India (OCCW), Microsoft Research India (OCCE), Persistent Foundation (ECR), and TCS (DDA).

OCCE recipient Sudip Misra delivered a keynote talk at Compute 2023, our education-themed conference which took place on December 9-11, 2023. We will have a keynote by the ECR winner at the ARCS Symposium (February 8-9, 2024) and by the OCCW winner Nutan Limaye at the co-located ACMI-W Annual Summit (February 8, 2023). ARCS will feature talks by the DDA recipients as well.

Both these events are co-located with the ACM India Annual Event (February 10, 2024) to be held at the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar. All award recipients will be felicitated at the Awards Ceremony during the Annual Event.

The above events celebrate the contributions and achievements in Computing from India. Please join us February 8-10, 2024 in Bhubaneswar. Registration will open soon. You can find the preliminary details on the Annual Event website. Like every year we have a stellar list of keynote speakers. It’s a major networking event where you will meet students, academics, and professionals active in computing from India as well as abroad. Do plan to attend, and get a chance to interact in person with the ACM India community and more.

On another happy note, let’s extend a very warm welcome to Flipkart, which has just come on board as an institutional partner at Silver tier.

With these achievements, ACM India ended 2023 on a high note, and we hope the new year brings in more happy tidings!

Regards,

Hemant
