Spotlight on Turing Laureates
The ACM A.M. Turing Award, computing’s most prestigious honor, acknowledges individuals who have made lasting and major contributions to the field. Here, we look back at some of these technologies and breakthroughs that continue to impact our lives, and the remarkable innovators who helped shape them.
Public Policy Issues
Daily headlines about cybersecurity, encryption, artificial intelligence, drones, and a host of other issues, underscore the growing and complicated relationship between computing and public policy. ACM recently formed the ACM Technology Policy Council (TPC) to oversee its technology policy efforts globally. With the goal of fostering enlightened policies, ACM’s US Technology Policy Committee (USTPC) and Europe Technology Policy Committee (Europe TPC) work with the TPC in their respective regions to provide technical expertise for policymakers, the computing community and the public.
ACM Updates Code of Ethics
ACM recently updated its Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The revised Code of Ethics addresses the significant advances in computing technology since the 1992 version, as well as the growing pervasiveness of computing in all aspects of society. To promote the Code throughout the computing community, ACM created a booklet, which includes the Code, case studies that illustrate how the Code can be applied to situations that arise in everyday practice and suggestions on how the Code can be used in educational settings and in companies and organizations.
